Review: Brunch at Urban Angel

Where? Urban Angel, Hanover Street, Edinburgh.

I came across Urban Angel in a blog post from one of my favourite free-from bloggers, Becky Excell at Gluten Free Cuppa Tea. Luckily I have two kind friends who were more than happy to try out the brunch menu at Urban Angel with me.

We arrived at about 10am on a Saturday morning and were lucky to be seated straight away. It was very busy so I’d anticipate a wait if you arrive later. I don’t want to spoil the anticipation of the review, but I think it’s worth the wait!

I was absolutely delighted to find out that everything on the brunch menu could be made gluten free. How amazing is that? I love love love not feeling like a problem customer! Gluten free doesn’t necessarily mean fodmap friendly, but I was still spoilt for choice. Despite this, I went for my favourite: gluten free toast, poached eggs and avocado. I know it’s very simple but it’s very tasty. Also, I just can’t poach eggs so it’s actually a very special treat for someone to do it for me!

It was absolutely delicious. I think this was the best gluten/wheat-free bread I’ve tried since I’ve been eating low-fodmap. I was so excited because it tasted so good, and not just ‘good for gluten-free’. It looks like they get their bread from Archipelago Bakery so I’ll have to investigate to see if I can buy it more often.

C had eggs benedict with bacon and a pot of tea and Martha went for scrambled eggs and ordinary toast with avocado. She also had a very exciting apple juice drink, I can’t remember exactly what it was but it smelled like Christmas which is always a delight. Everything was lovely and simple, and very tasty.

We had a great time here and I’ll absolutely be back. We’d said about trying out a few different places but to be honest I could quite happily come back here again and again.

Fodmap-friendliness: 5/5 I had a good few choices here which isn’t often the case.

Price: 4/5 (Why is brunch always so expensive?)

Service: 5/5

If you’re following a restricted diet or not, I’d 100% recommend Urban Angel. Even more exciting- they serve their brunch menu all day. Let me know if you’ve been and what you thought, or if there’s anywhere else you’d recommend and think I should add to my list.
